💧 Armenia’s Security Challenges: Water

Especially in the 21st century, water is not just a vital resource, but also an instrument of influence. If in the 20th century it was oil that changed the situation, in the 21st century water is gradually taking that place.

When a state controls, for example, the headwaters of a river, it to a certain extent controls the future of other states that use this vital resource.

The decision to build a reservoir or regulate — reduce — the flow of water can affect the drinking water, agriculture, and energy of millions of people, creating grave socio-economic and, ultimately, security problems.

Is that too bold? Not at all. Examples, as you know, are only multiplying.

Is Armenia next…?

The purpose of the Institute for Security Analysis (ISA) visual series, The Security Agenda, is to present the Institute’s assessments and recommendations regarding the security challenges facing Armenia and the Armenian people. Through this initiative, ISA seeks to foster evidence-based understanding among decision-makers, public opinion leaders, and citizens, and to contribute to informed public discourse on critical issues affecting Armenia’s future.
