About ISA

Our story

The Institute for Security Analysis (ISA) is an independent research institute that advances novel ideas to understand and address complex and evolving security challenges in the South Caucasus and beyond.

Founded in the aftermath of the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war, ISA was envisioned as an institution dedicated to lifting the fog around geopolitics and bringing clarity to security dynamics across Armenia and the wider region.

The collapse of Nagorno-Karabakh disrupted the security architecture that had previously restrained aggression against democratic sovereignty. This juncture prompted our founders to reconsider Armenia’s role in carving out space for democracy and counterbalancing coercive power in the region. Faced with imminent threats, they reflected on how the Armenian people have historically navigated instability and disruption — not merely to endure but to advance the values that define their role in democratic civilization: integrity, perseverance, and freedom. Contributing to this legacy has become ISA’s vision.

Our pioneers believed that these values, together with strategic projects that nurture expertise, could transform how security is understood and acted upon. Two years on, ISA has realized this vision by laying the foundations for public forums, talent programs, and compelling analysis.

Regional Affairs

ISA’s Regional Affairs Program aims to advance a critical understanding of political, social and economic dynamics across the South Caucasus; geopolitical developments in Eurasia; and the implications of Russia’s foreign and defense policies for regional security.

Defense and Security Program

ISA’s Defense and Security Program provides rigorous and multidisciplinary analysis of the current and emerging defense and security challenges and opportunities facing Armenia and its regional partners. It also works to create a unique, credible and independent platform for defense and security stakeholders from both Armenia and the region to more closely interact, exchange views, and share experiences regarding various matters of national security.

Hybrid Warfare Program

ISA’s Hybrid Warfare and Disinformation Program analyzes gray zone activities and influence operations in the South Caucasus and Eastern Europe. It applies strategic, creative, and rigorous thinking to assess risks, anticipate scenarios, and identify opportunities. Through methodologically grounded research, the program equips decision-makers with actionable insights to navigate complex hybrid challenges.
